Roman baths in Dorres

Hot, open air, sulphurous springs in Dorres - together with Pyreneum ice creams of Bellver a revelation of this summer (that is for me, both exist for ages). I'm gonna be happy customer of both from now on.

This roman baths have three places to soak, all made of granite: big pool with water about 37°C, two small pools in the upper part with a bit hotter water of 40°C and inside the "cave" there are two granite bathtubs, also with 40°C. For those who get a bit dizzy from hot sulphurous waters (like me) there is a tap with potable cold water.

The big pool has nice views of Catalan Pyrenees.

Seems the opening hours are usually from 9 to 20, every day all year long, with some closing time around November to mid-December. It is possible to enter with kids of any age.

I heard that about 30 years ago, this baths were not run by anyone, being without any fence nor entrance fee nor opening hours. Now the fee is 5 euro per adult and 3 euro per child. Babies and toddlers don't pay.

On the other hand, there are facilities of convenience worth of paying for. Outside showers, inside showers with toilets and changing rooms, sinks, in the winter there are heaters...also the lawn is mowed, place is clean, free loungers and at the entrance there are some refreshments.

We visited one of the hottest summer days (in the evening, we didn't want to get cooked), but I'm looking forward to autumn or winter. With all the snow around and fresh air it has to be awesome. Let's see if it will not be crowded, because today it wasn't.

One sunny Monday of July we picked this place for a picnic lunch. The area is easily identifiable with arrow pointing at a parking place.

However, the parking place is slightly far, considering the need to carry all the groceries and equipment - about 200 meters. The only obstacle seemed to be one removable chain across the entrance. As we learned later, the locals just unchained the road and continued straight to the picnic zone, where is also a parking, just couple of steps from the tables. Next time we'll probably follow the locals.

It's a very nice, clean and well managed park with lawn and tall trees. There are 4 little ponds, connected with a stream of water and some little waterfalls. On some there are wooden water mills. The streams seem to be a nice playzone for children.

All the tables in the shadow were full, so we picked one bench in the playground and while our children were sleeping/eating, we enjoyed the gianomous swing.
